Internet Governance Forum (IGF)
The Internet Governance Forum (IGF) is a multi-stakeholder platform established by the United Nations to facilitate discussions on public policy issues related to the Internet. The UN IGF serves to bring people together from various stakeholder groups, including governments, private sector, civil society, and the technical community, to discuss and shape the future of the Internet in an open, inclusive, and transparent manner. The annual IGFs are convened by the UN Secretary-General and supported by a different host country each year.
IGF Sri Lanka
The Internet Governance Forum Sri Lanka (IGF Sri Lanka) is a national-level initiative, initiated in 2016 that mirrors the global Internet Governance Forum (IGF) in its mission to provide a platform for dialogue on Internet governance issues. It aims to address specific challenges and opportunities related to the Internet within the context of Sri Lanka. IGF Sri Lanka provides a platform for open and inclusive dialogue on Internet governance issues relevant to Sri Lanka and it plays a crucial role in shaping the national discourse on Internet governance, ensuring that the development and use of the Internet within the country are inclusive, transparent, and beneficial for all.

IGF Sri Lanka 2026
The Lanka School on Internet Governance (LKSIG) is a premier body recognized by the Internet Governance Forum (UN) and is now in the process of hosting the Internet Governance Forum Sri Lanka (IGF Sri Lanka) 2026 in Sri Lanka as a local event. The session is scheduled to be held on 21st August 2026 in Colombo as a physical event.
The Internet Governance Forum Sri Lanka (IGF Sri Lanka) 2026 is a forum where policymakers, civil society, industry, the technical community, the academic community, and decision-makers discuss key aspects of Internet governance issues and key areas on an equal footing and through an open and inclusive process. IGF Sri Lanka serves as a multi-stakeholder platform for discussions, exchange, and collaboration at a regional level, and aggregate national-level discussions pertaining to the Internet, and related policies, ultimately advancing the Internet, technology, and Internet governance development in Sri Lanka.

IGF Sri Lanka 2024
The Internet Governance Forum Sri Lanka (IGF Sri Lanka) 2024 was successfully held on December 12th and 13th, 2024, in Colombo, under the theme “Empowering the Internet Through Multistakeholderism”, marking another milestone in Sri Lanka’s commitment to inclusive, multi-stakeholder discussions on internet governance. Since its inception in 2016, IGF Sri Lanka has served as a national platform mirroring the global Internet Governance
Forum (IGF), fostering dialogue on critical internet-related policies and challenges. IGF Sri Lanka continues to serve as a premier platform for multi-stakeholder discussions on Internet governance, policy, and digital development.
Organized for the third time by the Lanka School on Internet Governance (LkSIG), a recognized body under the IGF Secretariat (UN), IGF Sri Lanka 2024 featured five thematic tracks, ten high-level panels, and over 50 expert panelists, offering diverse insights into critical areas of internet governance. The event brought together policymakers, civil society, industry leaders,
academia, the technical community, and decision-makers, facilitating meaningful dialogue on topics such as digital rights, cybersecurity, AI governance, digital inclusion, and emerging technologies.
The forum concluded with five dedicated sessions, each addressing a critical dimension of Internet governance:
• Main Forum – Addressing overarching policy discussions.
• Women Internet Governance Forum (Women IGF) – Focusing on gender
inclusion in internet governance.
• Youth Internet Governance Forum (Youth IGF) – Engaging young leaders in
shaping the digital future.
• Digital Inclusion and Accessibility in Internet Governance Forum – Promoting equitable access and participation.
• Technical Internet Governance Forum (Tech IGF) – Exploring technical and
infrastructural aspects of internet governance.
Through these discussions, IGF Sri Lanka 2024 reaffirmed its commitment to an open, inclusive, and collaborative approach to internet governance. By fostering stakeholder engagement and policy recommendations, the forum plays a crucial role in shaping Sri Lanka’s digital ecosystem and governance framework while contributing to regional and global internet governance discourse.

UN IGF Coordinators for Sri Lanka
Kasun Tharaka Wickramasuriya
Kasun Tharaka Wickramasuriya is a Senior Manager of Capacity Building for the Information and Communication Technology Agency of Sri Lanka (ICTA), National Coordinator for the UN IGF in Sri Lanka, and ICANN Fellow. He is actively engaged to build capacity on Internet Governance among the Sri Lankan and Asia Pacific IG practitioners, and he is a Member of the Asian, Australasian, and Pacific Islands Regional At-Large Organization (APRALO) of ICANN, Member of Asia Pacific School on Internet Governance (APSIG), and a Member of Asia Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF) Multi-Stakeholder Group.

Sagarika Wickramasekera
Sagarika Wickramasekera is a member of the Internet Society Board of Trustees. She is currently serving as secretary of APSIG (Asia Pacific School of Internet Governance) and she is an Executive Committee member of APNG (Asia Pacific Next Generation Group).
